A visit to Parliament for students and teachers can bring to life elements of:
- sustainable democratic principles
- civics and citizenship
- Cross-curriculum priorities, and
- General capabilities for learners.
The South Australia Constitution Act provided for a two-house Parliament—a House of Assembly and a Legislative Council. A visit to the Chambers can bring to life some of the important debates that have occurred—debates around which male persons could vote in an election and then granting women in 1894 the right to vote and stand as members of parliament (a world first!). One of the world’s first secret ballot elections occurred in SA Parliament on Wednesday 22 April 1857.
